Menu bar app for macOS

Hold a key. Say it. It’s written.

Speakeys turns your voice into clean text right where your cursor is — in Mail, Slack, Notion, your code editor, anywhere. Select text and say what to change, and AI rewrites it in place.

Hi Marta, thanks for sending the deck. I went through it last night and I think the pricing section needs one more pass before Thursday. Can we grab twenty minutes tomorrow morning? → Make it shorter and a bit more formal. → Hi Marta, thank you for the deck. The pricing section needs one more revision before Thursday — could we meet for 20 minutes tomorrow morning?

How it works

Two keys. Nothing new to learn.

Speakeys lives in your menu bar. There’s no window to open and no app to switch to — you keep working exactly where you are.

Right ⌘

Dictate

Hold right ⌘, speak, let go. Your words are pasted at the cursor in any app that accepts text.

Left ⌥

Edit with AI

Select text, hold left ⌥ and say what to do with it. The selection is replaced with the result. Nothing selected? Speakeys writes new text from your instruction.

  • Right ⌥ stays free, so accented and special characters work as usual.
  • Press Esc — or any other shortcut, like ⌘C — to cancel a recording.
  • Taps shorter than 0.3 s are ignored, so you won’t trigger it by accident.

AI editing

Edit by saying what you want.

Give instructions the way you’d brief a colleague. Speakeys keeps the language of your text unless you ask for another one.

You say

“Cut this down to two sentences.”

Selected text

Just a quick update on the migration. We finished moving the billing service over the weekend, and so far everything looks stable, although we did see a couple of slow queries on Monday that we’re still looking into. The plan is to move the reporting service next week if nothing else comes up.

Result

We moved the billing service over the weekend and it’s stable, apart from a few slow queries we’re investigating. Reporting is next, planned for next week.

Works everywhere

If there’s a cursor, Speakeys works there.

Speakeys pastes text the same way you would, so it works in native apps, browsers, editors and chat tools alike. Your clipboard is restored right after.

The details

Small things that make it dependable.

Your words, spelled right

Add names, brands and jargon to a plain-text dictionary. Rules like “Postgres => PostgreSQL” fix recurring mistakes — inflected forms included. Changes apply instantly.

Polish, English or auto-detect

Set the language you speak, or let Speakeys detect it for each recording.

Clear audio, even with AirPods on

Speakeys records from your Mac’s built-in mic by default, so Bluetooth headphones don’t clip your first words or drop to call quality. Any input can be chosen.

Recent history

Your latest results stay one click away in the menu — click one to copy it again. History is stored only on your Mac.

Native and lightweight

Written in Swift for macOS. No Electron, no Dock icon, no window. Starts at login if you want it to.

Silence never gets pasted

Empty recordings are discarded, and Speakeys filters out the phantom phrases speech models sometimes “hear” in silence.

Privacy & EU

No account. No middleman.

Your voice never touches our servers. It goes from your Mac straight to the speech model — and nowhere else.

Your key, in your Keychain

Speakeys uses your own Groq API key, stored securely in the macOS Keychain.

Straight to the model

Audio is sent directly from your Mac to Groq for transcription. It never passes through us.

History stays local

Your recent results and settings are kept on your Mac and nowhere else.

Built in the EU, with GDPR in mind

Speakeys is made by Finarena Sp. z o.o., a company based in Poland. We never receive your recordings or texts — they stay between your Mac and Groq, under Groq’s own GDPR terms. The only thing our EU-hosted server sees is your license key when the app checks it.

  • GDPR Data Processing Addendum with EU Standard Contractual Clauses
  • Customers in the EEA contract with Groq UK Limited
  • Groq may not use your audio or text to train models
  • Optional Zero Data Retention in your Groq console
  • SOC 2 Type II audited infrastructure
  • Groq operates data centres in Europe, including Helsinki
Where is my data processed?

Speech recognition runs on Whisper large-v3, served by Groq. Groq offers a free tier to get started; beyond it you pay Groq directly at their API rates. Get a Groq key

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How does the free trial work?

Download Speakeys and use every feature for 7 days — no card, no account. When the trial ends, buy a plan and paste the license key you receive by email into the Speakeys menu (Enter license key…).

Monthly or Lifetime — what’s the difference?

Both include every feature and work on up to 3 of your Macs. Monthly costs €6 a month and can be cancelled anytime; the key stops working when the subscription ends. Lifetime is a one-time payment of €49 with free updates for version 1.

Is Speakeys GDPR-compliant? Where is my data processed?

Speakeys is made by an EU company, and your audio and text never touch our servers: they go from your Mac directly to Groq using your own API key, so we never receive or store them. Your relationship with Groq is covered by Groq’s Data Processing Addendum with EU Standard Contractual Clauses; customers in the EEA contract with Groq UK Limited. Groq may not use API inputs or outputs to train models. By default Groq doesn’t retain inference data, but may keep logs for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring — you can switch that off with Zero Data Retention in your Groq console (Settings → Data Controls). Groq runs data centres in Europe, including Helsinki, but for standard API accounts it does not guarantee EU-only processing, and data it retains is stored in the United States. If you need guaranteed EU-only processing, ask Groq about an enterprise agreement.

Which Macs does Speakeys run on?

Any Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later — Apple Silicon (M1–M4) and Intel. Speakeys is a universal app.

Do I need a Groq account?

Yes. Speakeys uses your own Groq API key for speech recognition and AI editing. Creating a key takes a minute at console.groq.com, and Groq offers a free tier. You paste the key into Speakeys once; it’s stored in your Keychain.

Is my voice recorded or stored?

Audio is sent from your Mac directly to Groq for transcription. Nothing passes through our servers, so your recordings and text never reach us. Your recent results are kept only in a local history on your Mac.

Which languages can I dictate in?

Speakeys is tuned for Polish and English, and with auto-detect it handles many other languages supported by Whisper. AI commands work in any language — the result stays in the language of your text unless you ask otherwise.

Which apps does it work with?

Any app where you can type: Mail, Slack, Notion, browsers, code editors, chat apps, Terminal and more. Speakeys pastes text at your cursor and restores your clipboard afterwards.

Why does Speakeys need Accessibility permission?

macOS requires it for two things Speakeys does: listening for the right ⌘ and left ⌥ keys, and pasting text into the app you’re using. Speakeys opens the right settings panel for you.

Can I use my own microphone or headphones?

Yes. Speakeys defaults to the built-in mic because Bluetooth headphones switch to a low-quality call mode when recording starts. You can pick any input from the menu.

What if I’m not happy with it?

Try it free for 7 days first. If you buy and change your mind, write to us within 14 days of purchase and we’ll refund you in full.
